Insulin resistance and systemic metabolic changes in oral glucose tolerance test in 5340 individuals: an interventional study

Researchers performed an OGTT across 4 time points and examined comprehensive metabolic effects in a total of 5340 individuals from 2 independent population-based cohorts.

The results revealed that insulin-resistant non-diabetic individuals are exposed to a similar adverse postprandial metabolic environment, and similar cardiometabolic risk, as those with type 2 diabetes. Wide range of metabolic abnormalities, including increased glycolysis related metabolites and decreased branched-chain amino acids, ketone bodies and triglycerides, associated with IR highlights the necessity of diabetes diagnostics and clinical care beyond glucose management.
