Circulating metabolites and general cognitive ability and dementia: Evidence from 11 cohort studies

Van der Lee et al. Alzheimer’s § Dementia 2018;14(6):707-722

In this paper, researchers quantified metabolic measures for 5658 participants across two discovery cohorts, with results being further replicated in four independent cohorts (N total= 56,652).

17 metabolites were found to significantly associate with improved or reduced cognitive ability, independently of known vascular and metabolic risk factors. In the study’s first main finding, 15 metabolites were replicated in 4 population cohorts, of these 6 metabolites were found to significantly associated with AD and/or all-cause dementia. These findings suggest several novel metabolic indicators of brain health.
