Heritability estimates for 361 blood metabolites across 40 genome-wide association studies

This study leveraged information from a decade of research in 40 studies and identified >800 class-specific metabolite loci associated with metabolite levels.

These metabolite loci were examined in a twin-family cohort (n=5117), to estimate total heritability and the proportion of heritability captured by known metabolite loci for altogether 309 lipids and 52 organic acids. The results showed significant differences in the SNP-based heritability estimates among different classes of lipids and organic acids. Interestingly, results suggest that higher heritability in phosphatidylcholines is driven by a lower number of carbon atoms and a larger degree of unsaturation.
